Voices of UAL:
An Exploration of Student Identity
Driven by a fascination with how students perceive culture and identity, and how elements like language and the concept of home contribute to a sense of community at UAL, I co-led a workshop focusing on these themes.
For the UAL Student Engagement Forum on January 31st, 2024, I initiated and led a project to capture this exploration on film. I organised, recorded, and edited a series of student interviews that delved into their diverse interpretations of identity and home.
The resulting video, screened during the workshop, provided a compelling glimpse into the students' lives, fostering a greater empathetic connection among university staff with the student body.
Following the video, participants engaged in a hands-on collage-making session. This creative activity allowed them to reflect on their own identities and the issues raised in the interviews. It was inspiring to see how the visual narratives provided a powerful catalyst for discussion and personal expression.
The workshop not only fostered a deeper understanding of the varied experiences within our community but also highlighted the power of art in navigating complex discussions about culture and identity.
